Choosing the best AI voice agent in India.
Every vendor demos well. Ten questions show which one survives your calls, your languages and your regulator.
Three kinds of AI voice agent companies
"Best" depends on who will build and run the agent. The vendors you will meet in India fall into three groups:
| Type | Examples | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developer voice platforms | Vapi, Retell AI, Bland AI | Engineering teams building their own agent quickly, mostly English-first. | You own prompts, compliance, Indian-language tuning, QA and telephony integration. |
| Conversational AI platforms | Haptik, Yellow.ai, Gnani.ai | Broad chat and voice automation across channels and industries. | How deeply voice is tuned to your calls, and what governance exists per turn. |
| Specialist voice AI for regulated industries | FormantAI | Banks, insurers, NBFCs and D2C brands that need audited, governed voice at scale in Indian languages. | Narrower focus: built for regulated, high-volume calling rather than general chatbots. |
Examples are illustrative of each category; check each vendor's current offering.
Ten questions that separate a demo from a deployment.
Ask every vendor the same ten. Score the answers on your own calls, not theirs.
- 01 · Languages
Does it understand your customers?
Test on your own recorded calls in Hindi, Hinglish and your regional languages — not a vendor demo script. Ask how numbers and dates are handled in code-mixed speech.
- 02 · Telephony
Is it fast on an Indian line?
Measure turn latency and barge-in over real telephony, through your dialer (Exotel, Ozonetel, Knowlarity, Ameyo), not over a browser call.
- 03 · Grounding
Does it ever make things up?
Every amount, date and policy detail should be read from your systems. Ask what happens when the data is missing.
- 04 · Compliance
Are the rules enforced or just documented?
RBI FPC calling hours, AI disclosure, IRDAI scripts, TRAI/DLT templates and DPDP consent should be checked on every turn — with a log to prove it.
- 05 · Frozen lines
Can mandatory wording drift?
Disclosures and regulated statements must be spoken verbatim, version-locked and excluded from any learning.
- 06 · Evaluation
Are calls graded, or sampled?
Ask whether 100% of calls are scored for grounding, flow and compliance, and how regressions are caught before release.
- 07 · Learning
Does it improve after go-live?
Most bots are as good on day 300 as on day 1. Ask how the agent learns from your calls, who approves releases, and how rollback works.
- 08 · Deployment
Where does your data live?
India-region cloud, your VPC, or on-prem. Ask whether your recordings are ever used to train anyone else's model.
- 09 · Integrations
Will it plug into your stack?
LOS/LMS, core banking or policy admin, CRM, dialer, UPI and payment links, WhatsApp and SMS hand-offs.
- 10 · Commercials
Is the pilot honest?
A fixed-fee pilot with one metric agreed up front, a written charter, and the fee credited if you go to production.
Where FormantAI fits
FormantAI is a self-learning voice AI company built in India for regulated finance — insurance, banking and lending — and for D2C brands. It is the right choice if you need:
- Agents fine-tuned on your own recordings in Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Marathi and Indian English.
- Every turn checked against your rules and the regulator's, with compliance lines frozen and never learned.
- 100% of calls graded by evaluation models, and a governed weekly learning cycle with human approval and one-click rollback.
- Deployment inside India — India-region cloud, your VPC, or on-prem — where your recordings train your model and no one else's.
- A forward-deployed engineering team and a fixed-fee pilot instead of a self-serve dashboard.
It is not the cheapest way to prototype a simple English voice bot. If that is the goal, a developer platform will get you there faster.
