Comparison

Voice AI vs IVR. Menus or conversations.

IVR routes callers. A voice agent finishes the job. Most teams need both, wired together.

Where IVR still wins

IVR is cheap, predictable and good at one thing: routing. If the caller only needs to pick a department, hear a fixed balance, or enter an OTP on the keypad, a menu is fine. Keypad entry (DTMF) is still the right way to take OTPs and account digits — FormantAI uses it too, so sensitive numbers are never spoken aloud.

Where voice AI pays back

IVR fails on anything that needs a conversation: an EMI reminder where the customer says they already paid, a renewal where the premium went up, a KYC call where the customer does not know what V-KYC is. Those calls either get dropped or go to a human. A voice AI agent handles them end to end — and, unlike an IVR, it can make outbound calls that are real two-way conversations.

Don't rip out the IVR

The low-risk path is to put a voice agent behind one IVR branch, or on one outbound journey, and measure it against the baseline:

  • Inbound: keep the menu for routing, send "talk to us" or a single high-volume branch to the agent.
  • Outbound: replace a recorded broadcast — say pre-due EMI reminders — with a two-way call that captures a promise-to-pay.
  • Handover: the agent warm-transfers to your team with the transcript and a summary, so no one asks the customer to repeat themselves.

FormantAI plugs into the dialers Indian contact centres already use — Exotel, Ozonetel, Knowlarity, Ameyo — and into your core systems. A fixed-fee pilot runs 4–6 weeks on one journey.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask.

What is the difference between IVR and voice AI?
An IVR plays recorded prompts and routes callers by keypad or a few keywords. A voice AI agent understands free speech, reasons over your data, completes the task in a natural conversation and can make two-way outbound calls.
Can voice AI replace IVR?
For many journeys, yes — but you rarely need to remove the IVR. Start by putting a voice agent behind one branch or one outbound journey, measure it, and expand.
Is voice AI more expensive than IVR?
Per minute, usually yes. Per resolved call it is often cheaper, because calls an IVR cannot finish no longer go to a human agent. Model it against your current cost per contact.
Does voice AI work with my existing dialer?
FormantAI integrates with Exotel, Ozonetel, Knowlarity and Ameyo, CRMs such as Salesforce, LeadSquared and Zoho, and your core banking, LOS/LMS or policy admin systems.
