Comparison

Voice bot or chatbot? Often both.

What each one is, what it is good at, and how a single agent can run on voice and chat.

Three terms, defined

Chatbot

Software that answers in text — on a website, in an app, or on WhatsApp. Older chatbots follow decision trees and keyword matching; newer ones use language models.

Voice bot

A bot you talk to on a phone call. It turns speech into text, decides what to say, and speaks back. Older voice bots are glorified IVRs; modern ones hold natural conversations. ("Voicebot" means the same thing.)

Conversational AI agent

The broader category: AI that understands free language, keeps context, looks up facts and takes actions — on any channel. A modern voice bot or chatbot is a conversational AI agent on one channel. An agent also does things: books, updates, sends links, hands over.

Side by side

Voice and chat are good at different jobs.

Why most journeys need both

The best results usually come from voice and chat working together: a call explains the EMI or the renewal and handles the objection, and a WhatsApp message delivers the payment link mid-call. The customer can reply on chat later and the agent remembers the call.

FormantAI runs one brain across telephony, WhatsApp, SMS, email and chat, with the same rules, memory and audit log on every channel. See voice and omnichannel and context and memory.

When a chatbot is enough

If customers come to you, the answer is a link or a document, and nothing is urgent, chat is cheaper and fine. When you need to reach people, or the conversation has emotion or money in it, use voice.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is the difference between a voice bot and a chatbot?
A chatbot talks in text on web, app or WhatsApp. A voice bot talks on a phone call, using speech recognition and speech synthesis. Both can be powered by the same conversational AI.
What is the difference between conversational AI and a chatbot?
Conversational AI is the technology — understanding language, keeping context, taking action. A chatbot is one application of it, in text. Rule-based chatbots are not conversational AI.
What does voicebot mean?
A voicebot is an automated system that holds spoken conversations, usually over the phone, to answer questions or complete tasks.
Can one AI agent handle both voice and chat?
Yes. FormantAI uses one reasoning engine across phone, WhatsApp, SMS, email and chat, so context carries between channels.
